This article will serve to provide the readers with a brief overview of the inspections performed at DMV. With the help of this article, the reader, i.e. you will be able to know exactly what all inspections the department of motor vehicles of your state will carry out.

Without further ado, here is the full list of inspections carried out by the department of motor vehicles.

a) Ambulances

Ambulances are accorded first priority during inspections. This is because being vehicles of public importance, it is critical that they are fully licensed and are in a proper condition to be driven in the roadways. No compromise can be taken vis a vis the life of an individual being ferried by an ambulance.

b) Commercial vehicles

Big and heavy commercial vehicles are accorded the next level of priority during inspections. This is especially true for vehicles whose carrying capacity is over 18,000lbs. Even those vehicles whose carrying capacity is 10,000lbs need to get their vehicles inspected annually by the respective department of motor vehicles of their state.

c) Tuned and modified cars
The tuner culture is fast catching up in many cities of the country. But even if the base model was certified, it is imperative that the modified and/or upgraded ride be inspected too. Only after proper inspection can a tuner car be given the registration certificate.

d) Buses for school transportation

The vehicles ferrying children to and from schools need to be thoroughly inspected to ensure the vehicle meets all the safety requirements. As such, due to the importance of conducting thorough inspection of these vehicles, it is important that one books an appointment with the respective state department of motor vehicles. This is to ensure these vehicles get the attention they deserve, without compromising on the work flow of other vehicles which line up on a daily basis.

e) Out of state vehicles

If a person is bringing an out of state vehicle into a particular state, and wishes to stay here for a long duration, that is, more than two months, then the person must get his/her vehicle inspected by officers within sixty days. Such vehicles will be subjected to a vehicle emissions test as well as verification of the VIN (Vehicle Inspection Number).

f) Imported vehicles and Homemade trailers

The vehicles in the aforementioned category fall in the grey market area. This is because there is very little control or regulation on the sale of imported cars and condition of homemade trailers. Thus to ensure, such vehicles are street legal, one must get it inspected by the department of motor vehicle of their state. The engine parts, emissions and street worthiness of these vehicles will be determined before they are issued the certificate.

g) Taxis

Taxis are also required to be inspected by the respective departments of motor vehicle. The frequency of inspections differs from state to state. For example, in Connecticut, the inspections are required only for first time inspections.
